Stone Symposium Tangen
OPEN CALL 2026

July 29 – August 23, 2026

After our first Steinsymposium 2024 Tangen at Åsgård Farm and the final exhibition at Hamar Art Association, we are excited to announce the second edition and warmly invite applications for our OPEN CALL for the Steinsymposium 2026.
In the Hedmark region of southern Norway lies Åsgård – a place shaped by artistic work with stone and a long tradition of symposia.
We – Pauline Berger, Clemens Junk, Andreas Kienlin, and Eva Hermens – all share a deep passion for stone as a material.
Transforming an artistic idea or question through a material that has always existed – and will likely endure forever – is a unique process. It requires patience and perseverance as much as technical skill in stone carving. The Norwegian landscape itself provides immense artistic inspiration, inviting a wide variety of approaches beyond the medium of stone. As freelance sculptors, we all work in many different contexts in our daily practice – which is precisely why a symposium like this is so important to us. Engaging intensively as a group of artists, exchanging ideas, and working on our own projects: these are experiences that are often rare in professional life.
We ourselves will take part in the symposium and wish to dedicate 3.5 weeks entirely to artistic work together with other sculptors.
While stone will be the main focus, artists working in other media are also very welcome –for instance, in painting, drawing, or installation. The symposium offers a framework for this, characterized by communal life on the farm, joint planning of a final exhibition, and creative exchange during the work process.

FACTS
Work will take place together at Åsgård. At present, there is no external funding available – the symposium is a self-organized artist
residency, with participants sharing communal costs and covering their own individual expenses.
For the second symposium, we have decided to work with local stone from the Hedmark region. The local gneiss is a hard stone and therefore requires prior experience in stone carving. The stones are already on site in various shapes and sizes. During the first days of the symposium, each participant can choose their own stone. Please note that the stones are natural fractured pieces – not cut or drilled blocks! Each sculpture remains 100% the property of the artist. Participants are responsible for organizing and covering transport and shipping costs themselves.
Tools and machines for stone work must also be brought by participants. Compressed air is available only to a limited extent.
The various buildings of the former Åsgård farm have been lovingly restored by the Kuppel-Kienlin family and now offer simple yet very cozy rooms in a typical Scandinavian rural atmosphere. There is a spacious communal kitchen with dining area and sanitary facilities. The nearest town with shops and other amenities is about 15 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by car.
The Mjøsa, a large lake, is about 10 minutes by car or 30 minutes on foot away.

July 29 – August 23, 2026
These weeks are primarily dedicated to continuous artistic work and exchange with the other participants. Short excursions to local sculptors or nearby quarries may take place and will be organized collectively. The final 2–3 days are reserved for preparing and installing the exhibition.

EXHIBITION | CLOSING
To conclude the symposium, there will be a final exhibition presenting the works created during the residency. We are in contact with Hamar Art Association, where there may be an opportunity to host the exhibition.

FUNDING
As this project is still in its early stages, there is currently no financial support available from grants or other institutions. We are actively working toward securing future funding through various sources. For now, the symposium is an invitation to self-organized, intensive, and communal artistic work in a truly inspiring Norwegian setting.
